There is also air, light, and noise pollution: it's like a work room or office that gets cluttered up and messy. We start a project and next thing we know it's a mess. One minute it's spotless, the next it's a complete mess.
It's hard to imagine that our great big sky is full of toxic stuff, and nothing ever gets done about it. The same goes for light pollution and sound pollution. It gets some attention, but is never addressed. I live in California where many young and old have never seen the Milky Way, and don't even know that there is one right above us.
Crime and road safety is probably the number one reason why we don't get to see the stars at night. There are answers to this epidemic, but no one appears to care. I have read some chatter online about maybe having a holiday where we shut off the lights, and enjoy the stars for a day. Personally, I think that's a great start.
But that still leaves issues with sound pollution. If we address all types of pollution, one thing at time, they compliment themselves. For example, if we have a lights down holiday, people will be inspired by the beauty of the night sky and want to do even more to clean up, and in the process, tax money would be saved.
It's like when we wash our clothes and clean up our room, we are less likely to lose our wallet and keys. We are also inspired to spring clean the kitchen or bathroom, so we go the extra mile, because it's worth the time, and we have fewer allergies.
Unfortunately when it comes to sound pollution control it's not a priority, because we have never felt what it's like. We don't realize how great it is. Some people think it's some kind of constitutional right to burn down the road in their loud noisy cars, but the more it's tolerated and ignored the closer it will be just too late to deal with once we realize it is a legitimate problem.
There are silver line benefits to cleaning up the skies, the streets, and the byways and highways. It all works for the good. It shouldn't be something political either.
